Skills that you need to have in order to become a lawyer

Like any other job, the lawyer job is not for everyone. You must like what you do.

Top skills needed if you want to become a lawyer:

1. Communicate – If you want to be a lawyer, you must be good at talking to people. You need to be able to make the clients understand your point of view and what’s best for them. If you don’t like talking to people or you are shy, this job is not for you.

2. Read and listen – A lawyer must always listen to his clients and understand their problems and concern and make the right decisions based on what the client wants. Also, as a lawyer, you must read and learn about subjects that can help him win a case. If you get annoyed easily, this may not be the right job for you. There are a lot of clients that are kinda annoying and you can’t yell at them or anything.

3. Synthesize – You will need to synthesize a large quantity of information.

4. Self-Motivation – Lawyers must be able to motivate themselves. In a law firm, no “traditional” bosses micro-manage subordinates’ work. Instead, bosses expect that when they assign cases, the work will be completed quickly and efficiently, and an inability to be self-motivated and a necessity for constant prodding will be disastrous for an lawyer’s career.

5. Energy and Enthusiasm – You need to love your work. When you are applying for a law firm, you need to demonstrate a real interest for the firm you are applying to, and the type of work they do. Your passion will enable you to talk about the firm and the reasons for your application in a vibrant way. You will naturally come across as highly-motivated applicant that will fit in and do well at the firm. Also, when working on a case, clients will see if you are interested in their case or not.

7.Negotiating – Reconciling different interests and opinions is one of the lawyer’s primary roles. When the parties to a proposed transaction disagree, the lawyer, acting as a facilitator, may be able to help them transact to a common ground. Although the client’s interests are a lawyer’s first priority, often those interests are served best after compromise and conciliation have paved the way to an equitable settlement.
